Polyprotic acids, acids with multiple protons (𝐻+), have different modes of ionization, depending on the environment pH level. Carbonic acid, for example, have the following levels of ionization:

𝐻2CO3 +OH +𝐻+HCO3 +OH +𝐻+CO23

This can be used to predict products of reactions with acidic salts.
