Solvay process

An industrial process to produce sodium carbonate (soda, ) and sodium bicarbonate (baking soda, ).

The overall process is

Process

• carbonate sodium chloride to create baking soda
• baking soda calcinated into soda
• ammonium chloride is recycled back into ammonia

The two main cycles

• ammonia cycle of solvay process
• carbon dioxide cycle of solvay process
